چکیده

It is widely accepted that, on ensemble average, the transmission T of guided modes decays exponentially with the waveguide length L due to small imperfections, leading to the important figure of merit defined as the attenuation−rate coefficient α = −/L. In this letter, we evidence that the exponential−damping law is not valid in general for periodic monomode waveguides, especially as the group velocity decreases. This result that contradicts common beliefs and experimental practices aiming at measuring α is supported by a theoretical study of light transport in the limit of very small imperfections, and by numerical results obtained for two waveguide geometries that offer contrasted damping behaviours.

Attenuation coefficient of single-mode periodic waveguides.

It is widely accepted that, on ensemble average, the transmission T of guided modes decays exponentially with the waveguide length L due to small imperfections, leading to the important figure of merit defined as the attenuation-rate coefficient α=-⟨ln(T)⟩/L. In this Letter, we evidence that the exponential-damping law is not valid in general for periodic monomode waveguides, especially as the ...

Planar and UV written channel optical waveguides prepared with siloxane– poly(oxyethylene)–zirconia organic–inorganic hybrids. Structure and optical properties

Organic–inorganic hybrids were prepared using ureapropyltriethoxysilane, methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane and acrylic acid modified zirconium(IV) n-propoxide precursors and were characterized by small angle X-ray scattering, X-ray diffraction and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The results indicate an effective interaction between the zirconium-based nanoparticles and the siliceous nanodomain...

Periodic structures in integrated optics

Thin-film dielectric waveguides with a periodic refractive index, a periodic substrate, or periodic surface are studied. The field is determined from Maxwell's equations using Floquet's theorem. The Brillouin diagram and the interaction regions are investigated. The bandwidth and the attenuation coefficients of the interaction regions are given as a function of the optical wavelength. A number ...

Optimized Silicon Antiresonant Reflecting Optical Waveguides for Sensing Applications

The development of an evanescent field sensor with an integrated Mach–Zehnder interferometric (MZI) configuration requires the fabrication of optical waveguides with two main characteristics: 1) monomode behavior and 2) high surface sensitivity for sensing biomolecular interactions in a direct way (without labels). In this paper, we present an experimental study for the optimization of the diff...

Dual-frequency Characterization of Bending Loss in Hollow Flexible Terahertz Waveguides

Low-loss, hollow, flexible, metal-coated waveguides were designed and fabricated for the maximal transmission of terahertz radiation. Since recent terahertz skin, colon, and breast cancer studies showed a contrast between normal and diseased tissues between 500 to 600GHz frequencies, flexible metal-coated waveguides with various bore diameters were studied at both 584GHz and 1.4THz frequencies ...
